Abolition of slavery, February 1: the slave woman and her key role in the colonial economy

186 years ago, over 71,000 slaves were “freed” in Mauritius. Of these, 28,000 were women, girls and infants. These women have 40% of the slave population were women. According to Satyendra Peerthum, female slaves played an important role in the colonial economy between the 1640s and 1830s, and even more so during the 1820s and 1830s, or during the last days of colonial slavery in our country.
