MV Wakashio: A lack of vigilance on board the blamed bulk carrier

CCID investigator evokes "deviations" from regulations during famous birthday party on board ship

Before the District Court of Port-Louis, yesterday it was the turn of Chief Officer Hitihamillage Subodha Janendra Tilakaratna, 45, to appear for his request for release. The lead CCID investigator, who came to support police objections to his release, reported a lack of vigilance on the part of senior officers as they celebrated a birthday on board, arguing that the Chief Officer was supposed to be at the controls when the bulk carrier ran aground on the south-eastern coast of the country, thus bypassing certain conditions necessary to ensure that the bulk carrier was properly steered.
